I've topped up the oil twice, for a total 8oz. I don't think that's excessive. As for filters, I would only recommend KTM’s, and that means from a dealers or online. KTM oil filter kit part number : 00050000068. A 15W- or 20W-50 will retain a higher viscosity and provide better protection to the cams than a 10W-50, even if these oils have the same HTHS. A healthy amount of ZDDP is important as well. Even with an optimal oil, the cams may still wear excessively on engines that have serious manufacturing defects. Mine seen 10,000rpm a few times before the 1000km and has always lived around the 7000 area. Advised oil change intervals are at 7,500 km if not mistaken (not 3,000). Fully synthetic can work well up to 15,000 km not sure your paper oil filter can. I see absolutely no benefit of the coffee filter excersize but as said it is your bike, your rules. Your catch line, imho, is simply wrong. By comparison, our last R1200GS test bike was good for 96 horsepower and 73 lb-ft…but weighed 25-30 pounds more. As part of the 990 upgrade the initial valve adjustment in the LC8 engine has been eliminated, so there’s just oil and filter to change at 600 miles, though you will still have to make regular final drive chain adjustments. My 2020 790 R recently crossed 2000 kms, and its now overheating badly on anything mildly technical . It was 14° (C) today, and the bike stopped multiple times (on hill climbs) due to overheating. For context, I've ridden the same trails (for years) on my 990 in much higher temps (+30 C°) and never had an issue. .
